As of 7:00pm on 24 February, 2026, the blue-green algae levels at Lake Boondooma in Wondai, Queensland, have been downgraded from high to moderate. This change means that many water-based activities that were previously restricted can now resume as the health risk to the community has decreased.

According to Sunwater, the dam is currently sitting at 87.44 per cent capacity. A high-level alert had been in place since 19 December, 2025, during which time officials recommended that people avoid direct contact with the water, including swimming and water-skiing.

While the move to a moderate level is a positive step, the South Burnett Regional Council advises visitors to still be careful and read all on-site signs before entering the water. People should avoid any areas where they can see green scum or clumps of algae floating, as conditions can change quickly with the weather.

The update is particularly helpful for local anglers who visit the lake to catch Australian Bass, Golden Perch, and Silver Perch. Information from Fisheries Queensland notes that the lake remains a major regional fishery, though those who catch fish are encouraged to wash them in clean, fresh water before eating them.
