Residents in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, are preparing to have their say on a proposed 18-storey building that could change the local skyline and increase traffic in the town centre. The NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces recently moved the project at 29 Park Street into a state assessment pathway, which means state officials will make the final decision instead of the local council.

The plan by developer Planet Warriewood includes up to 210 homes, with 35 units dedicated to affordable housing, as well as new shops and entertainment areas. This site on the corner of Park and Warlters streets was previously the subject of a different building plan that was rejected in late 2023.

According to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, local leaders were not consulted before the state government took over the planning process. Mayor Adam Roberts has now asked for a meeting with the state to discuss how the building will impact local parking, water services, and the sewer system.

While the project has been given a special status, it is not yet approved and a formal application is still to be submitted. Once the developer files the paperwork, the public will be able to look at the floor plans and maps to provide their feedback on the development.
