The federal government has confirmed $10 million for the planning and preliminary work of a new bridge on Dixons Long Point Road in the Central West of New South Wales. This investment, confirmed on 20 February, 2026, is a key step toward creating a reliable road link between the regional hubs of Orange and Mudgee.

Andrew Gee, the Independent Federal Member for Calare, said the funding will be used to scope the construction of a bridge over the Macquarie River. The project aims to replace a difficult dirt track with a modern road that remains open during wet weather.

The upgrade was previously removed from the federal budget in late 2022 because of rising costs but has now been returned to the program. Once the bridge is finished, the travel time between the two major towns is expected to drop by up to one hour.

The Federal Member for Calare said the new route will improve safety for drivers and help emergency services travel through the area more quickly. The upgrade will also provide a better path for heavy freight trucks and support growth in the local community.
