The NSW Government announced on 20 February 2026 that it will introduce a minimum age for riding e-bikes to improve safety for residents and pedestrians in Macquarie Fields, New South Wales. Transport for NSW is currently reviewing whether the legal age limit should be set between 12 and 16 years old, with a final decision expected by June.
Starting in March 2026, the state will also require e-bikes to meet a specific safety standard that limits motors to 250 watts and ensures power assistance stops once the bike reaches 25 kilometres per hour. Local police have already increased helmet and safety checks across the Macarthur region following a significant rise in e-bike use over the last few years.
According to the NSW Government, officers will have new powers to seize and destroy illegal or modified bikes and will trial portable machines to test motor speeds during roadside stops. These measures are designed to stop high-powered machines from being used dangerously on local footpaths and shared spaces.
Families in Macquarie Fields who currently own 500-watt e-bikes will be allowed to continue using them during a three-year transition period. However, all e-bikes must meet the new 250-watt limit by 1 March 2029 to remain legal for use on public roads and paths.
