The Somerset Regional Council has awarded three local athletes with Excellence Bursaries to support their participation in state-level sporting competitions. The grants were announced during the council meeting on 8 April 2026, providing financial assistance to young competitors from across the Somerset region, including Kilcoy.

The bursaries were presented to softball players Rylan Wagner and Fletcher Goff, as well as netballer Ella Gillies. Rylan Wagner, representing the Redcliffe team, and Fletcher Goff, representing the Caboolture team, competed in the Under 14 Boys State Championships in Toowoomba from 10 to 12 April. Netballer Ella Gillies was selected for the Under 15 Ipswich Green team, which participated in the Townsville City Netball Association state age competition from 11 to 14 April.

Each athlete is eligible to receive $250 in funding through the program. The support is part of a broader community initiative championed by Mayor Jason Wendt to assist local youth in representing the region at higher levels of sport.

The Excellence Bursaries program is managed through the council’s community grants budget. Applications for this support are accepted year-round, with council staff processing requests on a monthly basis.
