The Somerset Regional Council has formally applied for federal funding to build new netball courts and upgrade the local pool in Fernvale and Lowood, Queensland. During a meeting on 25 February 2026, the council moved to secure $5.65 million to improve fitness options and help the community keep up with local growth.

The plan includes a $1.6 million expansion of the Fernvale Sports Park to add four new netball courts, which will double the current space available for local players. This project follows a promise made in 2025 by Shayne Neumann MP to support the Somerset Storm Netball Club and local families.

In nearby Lowood, the council is seeking $4.05 million for a second stage of upgrades at the local swimming pool. This work would provide an enclosed pool for year-round swimming and water therapy, along with a new multi-purpose building and better access for people with disabilities.

Mayor Jason Wendt and the council are also looking for state funding to build a $1.62 million footpath along Lowood Minden Road to connect the town to Tarampa State School. There are also plans to study a potential new bike path that would connect Twin Bridges to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail in Fernvale.

These funding requests are being made through the Australian Government’s Major and Local Community Infrastructure Program. If the applications are successful, the projects will provide more modern places for residents to exercise and socialise as more people move into the region.
