On 9 March 2026, Mayfair Australia Corporation agreed to buy the Phosphate Hill fertiliser plant in North-West Queensland, a move that provides more certainty for broadacre crop farmers in Miles, Queensland.
The company reached a binding agreement to take over the site through its subsidiary, Ryowa II GPS, from the current owner, Dyno Nobel.
The facility was sold for a token price of $1, although the agreement includes potential payments of up to $100 million based on how the plant performs in the future. This ownership change marks the end of Dyno Nobel’s involvement in the Australian fertiliser industry.
The deal comes at a critical time for the agricultural sector, as the plant was previously facing a permanent closure by 30 September 2026 if no buyer was found. Local farmers rely on the facility for stable and affordable supplies for upcoming planting seasons.
Chief Executive John Canavan will lead the transition of the facility under the new ownership. The purchase is still subject to several conditions, including formal approvals from the government and regulatory authorities before it can be finalised.
